Researchers from Sun Yat-sen University in China participated in the peer-reviewed study, which was published in BMJ Mental Health. The study discovered a correlation between good mental resilience and a lower chance of dying from all causes in individuals.
Data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), a long-term, nationally representative study of US people at least 50 years old, were examined by the researchers. Starting in 1992, the study gathers data on participants' health, family, marital, and economic condition, which is reviewed every two years.

Subsequently, the study examined HRS data from 10,569 participants, covering the first-ever collection of mental resilience questions between 2006 and 2008. This subsection's average age was 66, and 59% of its members were female.
3,489 participants passed away over the 12-year tracking period for these individuals, who were monitored until May 2021 or until they passed away.
The participants' mental resilience and their death from any cause were found to be related by the researchers, who also discovered that those with better mental resilience scores were at a decreased risk of passing away.

The study also discovered that women were more likely than males to have a substantial correlation between a high mental resilience score and a lower chance of death. Additionally, resilience scores were connected to 10-year survival probability scores and split into quartiles. According to the study, those in the highest quartile had a 53% lower chance of passing away in the following ten years than those in the lowest.
The study was observational, according to the researchers, thus it is incorrect to draw conclusions about a causal relationship between mental resilience and fewer causes of death. They also mentioned that the study did not take into account characteristics like genetics and adversity during development.
A scale that examined traits like persistence, composure, purposefulness, self-reliance, and acceptance that some events must be faced alone was used to gauge mental resilience.
The study's findings said that a number of variables, such as happiness with social support, good emotions, self-rated health, and life purpose, have been found to have an impact on psychological resilience.
"Inducing these positive emotions may strengthen psychological resilience's protective qualities and lessen the detrimental effects of cumulative adversity on adults' mental health."
In order to reduce mortality risks, they continued, "The findings highlight the potential effectiveness of interventions aimed at promoting psychological resilience."

Age UK's charity director, Caroline Abrahams, stated: "It's noteworthy that so many studies looking at what helps us in later life comment positively about a list of similar factors, but the authors of this study are careful not to conclude that there are causal links between mental wellbeing, resilience, and the chance of death."
Maintaining relationships, having a purpose, and engaging in activities you enjoy all seem to be beneficial and, of course, enhance the quality of life. In these areas, some older persons are more fortunate than others, but even little adjustments could make a difference. Above all, we are free to pursue our happiness as we age, understanding that it is also beneficial to us.
According to Age UK, eating healthily, engaging in a new exercise or interest every day, spending time with friends and family, and trying new things are all good ways to take care of a person's mental wellbeing as they age.
